Abstract
This study was designed to examine how perfectionist characteristics of mothers affect mental health of their children. We conducted a survey for 5th and 6th graders at three elementary schools located in Daejeon City and Province of Chungcheongnam-do and their four hundred and fifty-seven mothers. In order to measure mothers¡¯ propensity for perfectionism, we used the Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (MPS). Also, in order to measure children¡¯s mental health, we used the Symptom Checklist-90-Revision (SCL-90-R). First, the result shows that the children of mothers who are more worried about making mistakes are more depressed and not healthy emotionally compared with the children of mothers who are not. Second, there was no significant difference in terms of mental health between the group of children of mothers who hold high standards for themselves and the group of children of mothers who hold low standards for themselves. Third, the children of mothers who were severely criticized by their parents were more sensitive to relationship with people, more depressed, and not healthy emotionally than the children of mothers who were not severely criticized by their parents. Fourth, the children of mothers who have high doubt about their actions were more sensitive to relationship with people, more depressed, and not healthy emotionally than the children of mothers who do not. Fifth, the children of mothers who are highly organized are less sensitive to relationship with people, less hostile, less depressed, less obsessed, and healthier than the children of mothers who are less organized. In conclusion, mothers¡¯ perfectionism affects their children¡¯s mental health negatively. However, mothers who are highly organized affect their children¡¯s psychological stability positively because they expect, plan, and prepare properly for their children¡¯s life.
